The Essence of Ecotourism

The Essence of Ecotourism

by Stuti Hegde

Ecotourism is a form of tourism involving visiting fragile and relatively undisturbed natural areas, intended as a low-impact and often small scale alternative to standard commercial mass tourism. It means responsible travel to natural areas, conserving the environment, and improving the well-being of the local people. Its purpose may be to educate the traveler, to provide funds for ecological conservation or to foster respect for different cultures and for human rights.

Ecotourism involves a lot more than just a leisure trip. It may be a fun activity for several, but it especially involves serving the community. Apart from conserving the nature and environment of a place, ecotourism involves interacting with locals and helping them live a better life. I am especially inclined toward rural children, and want them to have access to good health and hygiene measures as well as education and the importance of eco-friendliness.

As an artist and musician, and someone who is fond of arts and culture, preserving the people, environment and their arts proves to be an important aspect. It is important to interact with the nature, which is severely different from exploiting it. Along with this, talking to the locals is an essential aspect of ecotourism. Just talking to them, listening to their problems, and teaching them basics of school-type education is a also sufficient.

In conclusion, ecotourism is not just a part of tourism but to an extent, is a way of life. It is beyond traveling- it includes interaction with new environments and cultures.

We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch- we are going back from whence we came.
